Anyway, my recommendation is to do this as a day trip and just skip the camping altogether. Make sure you leave as early as you can so you can get here early, because the park Rangers close down the parking when it gets too busy. Also, be prepared to endure one full hour driving down a bumpy, dirt road. Low-clearance vehicles (like our family van) need to exercise special caution.
There's a little rope swing you can use to swing into a beautiful little crystal-clear, deep blue pool of water. We also hiked up the creek, scrambling up the little water falls, and then coming back down stream. If you want to do that, you'll definitely want to bring your water shoes.
Super awesome! Our family of 6 came here on June 26th, 2015 and we were fortunate enough to have a private little experience.
Don't come without your permit. You'll be told you can't park!
We also had a little excitement and horror the one night we camped there (further down in the camping area.. there's no camping at this little parking area). At around 1:30am, we had a white-and-black-stripped visitor to our camp site. I shined my light right into its eyes, and watched it come right up to our tent (with all of the windows unzipped because of the heat) before I got really nervous and turned off my light and prayed that it wouldn't get frightened somehow and leave us with a special scent to remember it by.
Road is extremely off-road (they do warn you about it with signs). Regardless, a LITTLE upkeep would certainly help ypur vehicle's lifespan.
A beautiful blue clear water river!! The water is cold, but with the heat from the Desert it´s great balance! The dirt road can be mean to small cars. I would recommed going there by Truck or SUV.
Now, regarding the camping here.. it is absolutely horrific. During the winter I imagine it might be pleasant, but during the summer it was not enjoyable at all. We were planning on staying two nights, but we decided not to stay the second night. Of course the heat is to be expected, but the bugs are what really made it the pits.
We came up to see Fossil Creek Falls from Phoenix which took about 90 minutes to get to Fossil Creek Road, it took us another 90 minutes to go the 14 miles to get down to our parking site. The road is listed as primitive and it is probably one of the worst roads I have ever been on. We saw a car that had a blown tire on the road, they were able to fix it themselves luckily because there is spotty cell phone coverage. No matter which parking area you get into there is usually decent place go swimming close by. If you get the chance get a spot as close as you can to Fossil Creek Falls and hike in. The water is chilled but feels great. Bring extra shoes or beach socks to help protect your feet as there are numerous rocks to get to the water. Overall this was a great place to visit. The Falls were great, hiking easy and the people and Rangers you meet were all friendly. Just wish the road in would get a little more upkeep so I didn't have to worry about blowing a tire or ruin my car's suspension.
